Great Pyrenees Dogs - Where Do They Come From?
The exact origin of Great Pyrenees dogs is unknown. According to some sources, the breed may have originated from Siberia or Asia. The found remains of the dogs are dated back to as far as the Bronze Age. They prove that the Great Pyrenees dog was spread over the vast territory of Europe.
It is also believed that the Great Pyrenees dog is the descendent of the Hungarian Kuvasz and the Maremmano-Abruzzese. Great Pyrenees dogs are closely related to the St. Bernard and the Newfoundland. Despite a variety of theories as to the origin of the breed, the universal truth is that the Great Pyrenees dog is a very old breed.
In the middle centuries, Great Pyrenees dogs served mainly as flock guardians. Their physical qualities and temperament characteristics allowed them to make good protection dogs. Smugglers are said to have made use of these dogs, too. The Great Pyrenees dog was hard to detect as it passed the border.
As the breed history goes, at the beginning of the 20th century, the Great Pyrenees dogs were scarce in numbers. However, thanks to efforts of breed fanciers, Bernard Senac-Langrange and M Dretzen, the population was reestablished. The AKC recognized Great Pyrenees dogs in 1933.
