Nowadays, the breed is rarely seen in a show ring and serves mainly as a pet. The GPCA promotes the breed through education and developing breeder and buyer guidelines. Pyrs are loved for their intelligence, dignity, inborn protective instincts, and bear-like appearance.

The breed is closely linked to the Hungarian Kuvasz nd the Maremma Sheepdog and was also used as breeding stock for the Newfoundland. France is considered a native country of the breed where it performed a variety of functions including property protection and human companion.
