The American Kennel Club recognized these dogs in 1931 and the first official organization was established in 1934. The community of Pyr lovers has been growing ever since and these dogs are now common in the United States.

These dogs are believed to have originated in Pyrenean Mountains where they were used to protect flocks from predators such as the wolf and bear. Later, they were widely spread as estate guardians and did also well as personal protection dogs. The great pyrenees breed will receive training if it's turned over to a rescue.
